Abstract
Until now, the therapy for the chronic schizophrenics in Korea has largely depended on the drug-treatment. The chronic schizophrenics require proper therapeutic approaches in multilateral ways because of their complicated causes and symptoms. Thus, this study is mainly focused to apply Group Art Therapy to the chronic schizophrenics in order to fulfill this kind of therapeutic requirement, and then find out how the therapy affects the depression reduction and improves the quality of their life having appeared to them in common. For this research, 10 inmates with positive chronic schizophrenia were carefully chosen in the "C" hospital in "C" county by psychiatric professionals, based on the diagnostic regulation of DSM-IV(American Psychiatric Association, 1994). They were asked to attend the session for 60 minutes once a week, during which this group art therapy was applied to them 12 times in total. In order to evaluate the effect of Group Art Therapy, I duly applied "Calgary Depression Scale for Schizophrenia" and "Quality of Life" to this experiment. Besides, Wilcoxon Signed-rank in pairs with the statistics of Bonferroni Correction was introduced to the examination of the effect on the difference between before and after this program, The research results are as below. The result of Wilcoxon Test to the Depression Scale and Quality of Life turned out to be meaningful at the significance level p<5.0, compared with the situation before the treatment of Group Art Therapy, which means the therapy proved effective not only to reduce the patients' depression but also to enhance the quality of their life. Through further systematic and consistent research, this study shall be complemented by the development of various Art Therapy programs as well as the deeper and wider experiment and examination.
